CENOTES
A cenote is a water-filled sinkhole formed in the limestone. The word "cenote" comes from the Mayan word "dzonot," which means "well.” These natural wonders were significant to the ancient Mayan people, who believed they were passages to the underworld.
The formation of cenotes is closely tied to the geological origins of the region. For millions of years, the Yucatán Peninsula was covered by a shallow sea. Over time, sediments and organic remains accumulated on the seabed. These sediments gradually compacted and transformed into limestone rock. Beneath this layer lies another underground layer of softer, water-soluble limestone.
Groundwater flows through these soft underground layers, gradually dissolving the limestone. This process leads to the creation of caves and underground caverns. Eventually, the roofs of these caverns collapse due to weight or other geological factors, forming what we now call cenotes.
Each cenote is unique in its shape and size. Some are open, with crystal-clear waters visible from above, while others remain entirely enclosed underground.
The Riviera Maya is home to countless cenotes, and visiting at least one is an experience you simply can't miss.
